Using Orchid Lights To Improve Blooming
Orchids have very specific requirements for many factors including lighting. Not unlike many other house plants, their health and longevity is closely linked to the amount and type of light that they receive. If you take their natural environment into consideration it isn’t too difficult to understand why orchids have different lighting requirements than other house plants.
.
Although orchids occur naturally in a wide variety of climates and terrain, those found in homes are typically the varieties that would grow on tree branches up above the forest floor in tropical climates in their natural home environment. So it shouldn’t be surprising to discover that they thrive in conditions where there is more sunlight than there would be closer to the ground.
.
Additionally it should be noted here that even up in the trees the light is still somewhat diffused by the leaves on the trees, therefore orchid growers may need to be careful not to expose their plants to prolonged direct sunlight.
.
Placing your orchid plant in an eastern facing window can be all you need to expose it to just the right amount of cool morning sun without subjecting it to the harsher lighting conditions in the afternoon. Your objective here is to give it about twelve hours of light each day.
.
Of course different orchid species will have different specific lighting requirements, so a good approach would beto ask your florist for recommendations and to do some research on your own. You can check online on websites and forums and even in bookstores or your local library for more information about your particluar type of orchid.
.
Getting the lighting conditions around your orchids will determine whether or not it blooms. Insufficient light will starve the plant of the nutrients it need to produce blooms and too much light can actually burn the plant as a result of water leaving the plant too rapidly.
.
You may find that some plants simply love to be in the sun and do extremely well there (these are sometimes called hard growing orchids), whereas others prefer to be in the shade (soft growing orchids). In the absense of expert know-how for your particular plant you can let your may be able to just let your orchid “tell” you how much light it needs.
.
If your orchid plant is getting too much light, the leaves can become yellow and you may notice the appearance of brown or oranges spots. All you need to do then is move it to a shadier spot. If it isn’t getting enough light then theleaves may turn dark green, and although the plant probably won’t die, the liklihood that it blooms will besignificantly reduced. Again just give your orchid what it want ( in this case more light) and you will be rewarded with a spectacular display of beautiful blooms.
.
Artificial lighting is also an option you may want to consider to keep your orchids at optimal health. Some retailers offer growing lights with built in timers so youcan regulate the amount of light your plants receive withouttoo much effort on your part. Depending on the quality and quantity of lights your plant needs, this may or may not bea viable option. Just be warned that prices can vary widely.
.
Some people have used a combination of flourescent and incandescent bulbs to achieve lighting conditions that workwell with their orchid plants but again this may or may notbe suitable for everyone.
.
More and more people are realizing that growing orchids is not something that needs to be reserved only for the very experienced or rich plant enthusiasts. Armed with a little knowledge about the lighting, water and nutritional requirements of your chosen orchid species, even a complete beginner can enjoy consistent, beautiful blooms for years to come.
